Wir fahren weiter ins Off, mitten durch die Steppe bis Pawlodar. Wir halten nach der Stadt an einem Salzsee und erleben einen dramatischen Sonnenuntergang.

Die interessante Steppenlandschaft links und rechts von uns war bis in die 1980er Jahre hinein Sperrgebiet. Der sogenannte Poligon im Großraum Semipalatinsk war ein 15.000 Quadratkilometer großes Testgebiet für Atomwaffen. Zwischen 1949 und 1989 gab es im Schnitt eine Explosion pro Monat, 470 Atom- und Wasserstoffbombenexplosionen. Die Bewohner wappneten sich mit reichlich Wodka gegen die Strahlung.
Angeblich bleiben die Strahlenwerte der Stadt Semipalatinsk und das Gebiet aber heute wieder unterhalb der europäischen Grenzwerte. So richtig wohl fühlen wir uns hier trotzdem nicht. Wir halten nur kurz in einer sandigen und mediterranen Kieferlandschaft. Es könnte so schön sein…
Wir übernachten an einem Salzsee. In der Ferne sieht man die Berge des Altai, unser Ziel.
